NYSE-listed owner and operator of 13 modern LNG carriers (ME-GI and X-DF); crewing handled through Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement.
As Chief Engineer on the X-DF tonnage I am generally content — I would not take the ME-GI ships. Salary is average for the segment; some Greek competitors pay more. Food and the general atmosphere depend on the captain you draw. The office neither pressures nor particularly helps, which suits me. The weak side is shore technical support: budgets came down this year and every purchase order has to be argued through the superintendent. One more note on careers: promotion from Third Engineer to gas engineer requires holding a Second Engineer's licence — a candidate I proposed for promotion on board was declined on that basis, with exceptions made only for urgent need.
