I joined for the higher salary and the prospect of moving across to the group's gas fleet — a move that in practice does not happen. On board, the Second Engineer is the electrician's direct boss, and the role collects everything: weekly oily-water separator checks, bilges, leakages, sounding tanks despite two cadets being on board, full responsibility for the inert gas and exhaust gas systems, ballast water treatment, the provision plant, air conditioning and every alarm in the engine room. Demarcation is absurd — I would be called to switch on a light because it is electrical, and woken at night to adjust the oxygen analyser because nobody else could operate the boiler.
