I am currently working on one of the company's vessels. The story about the previous incident is true, but after that the company banned its vessels from trading in that area. There is enough work in the engine department, and my experience with Bulgarian and Russian crew members has been normal. The office generally treats the crew fairly; however, the company booked flights with only a one-hour connection, my baggage was lost, and it was delivered three days later.
I worked for Unity Ship Management on two contracts and had plans for a third. The company is average overall: contracts are four months for senior crew, pay is around the market average, internet is provided through Starlink, and the food allowance is $10 per day. The main problem is crew-change planning: many people leave before joining because they receive unclear information about when and where they will be assigned, and even a promised assignment may not happen. Planning and communication are very weak.
I worked with a Bulgarian captain for the first time after a previous ship. He doesn't allow shore leave if it's less than a day before departure. He doesn't buy anything for the bond store and speaks no Russian, even though he's over 60. Fortunately, there are no Indians in management, so the work environment is quite calm. The internet is Starlink with 1GB free and 30GB for $40 a month. Overall, I find the company average; we'll see how it goes. I got hired directly through the office in Varna. I worked with Unity Ship Management and the salaries for December 2024 were as follows: Captain - 10100, Chief Engineer - 10000, Second Officer / 2nd Engineer - 7700 (8000 if you have a higher diploma), Electrician - 5500 (but it seems you can negotiate for more, around 6000). There was a third engineer earning around 3200. There are also regional bonuses - Captain/Chief Engineer around 300, Chief and 2nd Engineer 200, and all others 100. If you work well, you can receive a 1000 performance bonus at the end of the contract.
