I sailed as Chief Officer on a permanent contract. The structure splits your pay: half while home, half on board — which sounds fine until you notice it mostly serves to bind you. Standby pay was cut to thirty percent, actual standby was hard to obtain, and contracts written as three months routinely ran four to five, followed by about two months at home. The company gets a locked-in officer; what the officer gets in return I never quite found.
