I worked for Delta Tankers. Salary was paid regularly, usually on the 3rd or 4th of the month, and the food was very good, with fresh vegetables, fruit and a well-stocked refrigerator. However, supplies were inadequate, the vessels had no bond store, and crew changes were often delayed; some vessels operated for months without a complete crew. I also witnessed pressure to mix residual fuel and later produce inaccurate bunker documentation, while an ITF intervention was needed to arrange a crew change. The company’s hiring process was highly focused on appearance, and candidates could be rejected because of a beard or other visible features.
I did not pass the interview because I was wearing a plain red sleeveless T-shirt. The company rejected me because of my appearance rather than my professional qualifications.
